VENICE, CA — January 7, 2025
MailRoute today introduced MailRoute Hosted Mail, a full email hosting service with the company's own filtering built in rather than sold alongside it.
MailRoute has filtered mail in front of other people's mail servers since 2003. Hosted Mail extends that to the mailbox itself: 50GB IMAP mailboxes, webmail, and the same inbound and outbound security customers already run, from one vendor on one bill.
Mailboxes with the Filtering Already In
The usual arrangement is two purchases. An organization buys mailboxes from a platform provider, then buys security separately because the built-in filtering is not sufficient on its own. That means two vendors, two invoices, two support paths, and two quarantines to check when a message goes missing.
Hosted Mail collapses that. Filtering is not an add-on tier; it is the same engine already protecting MailRoute's filtering customers, applied to mailboxes MailRoute hosts.
"Our team has worked on email security since 1997, and we have spent more than two decades filtering mail for servers we did not run," said Thomas A. Johnson, founder and CEO of MailRoute. "Hosting the mailbox too is the obvious next step. It is the same infrastructure, one bill, and one place to look when something goes wrong."
What the Service Includes
- 50GB per mailbox, with additional storage available beyond that
- Webmail, IMAP, and POP3 access, so existing clients keep working
- 99.999% uptime guarantee, backed by an SLA
- Filtering included — spam, phishing, ransomware, and spoofing protection on every mailbox
- Forwarding and autoresponders, plus granular administrative controls
- Migration assistance for organizations moving mail history from a previous host
Activation follows the same path as MailRoute's filtering service: a DNS change, with mailbox migration handled separately and on the customer's schedule.
Plans and Compliance
Hosted Mail is offered in the same three tiers as MailRoute Email Security Services. Basics covers core security and mailbox functionality. Enterprise adds phone support, LDAP/AD synchronization, single sign-on, and Email Continuity. Enterprise U.S. runs in US-only datacenters with US-citizen-only account access, and meets ITAR, HIPAA, and NIST 800-171 requirements — relevant to contractors that need the mailbox itself inside a compliant boundary, not just the filter in front of it.
Details and current pricing are on the Hosted Mail service page.
About MailRoute
MailRoute has provided hosted email filtering since 2003. Founder Thomas A. Johnson has worked in email security since 1997, when he built Big Fish Communications — later renamed FrontBridge Technologies — which Microsoft acquired in 2005 and still operates today as Exchange Online Protection. MailRoute is self-funded and independent, and owns and operates its own infrastructure.
