Built by the people who built Microsoft’s email security
We’ve been protecting email for over two decades. No pivots, no distractions, no venture capital telling us to chase the next shiny thing. Just email security, done right.
The story
In 1997, MailRoute founder Thomas A. Johnson launched Big Fish Communications, one of the earliest email security companies. Spam was still an annoyance. Big Fish was already building the tools to fight it.
Big Fish became FrontBridge Technologies. In 2005, Microsoft acquired FrontBridge and turned it into Exchange Online Protection, the email security backbone of Office 365 protecting hundreds of millions of mailboxes today.
We didn’t just work in email security. We built the foundation that Microsoft still runs on.
In 2003, before the FrontBridge acquisition closed, MailRoute was founded independently, self-funded, laser-focused, and free from the compromises that come with being a feature inside a larger platform.
MailRoute has been in continuous operation since 2003: universities, government agencies, Fortune 500 companies. We’ve never been acquired. Never pivoted. Never taken venture capital. We answer to customers, not investors.
The founder
In email security since 1997: Big Fish Communications, then FrontBridge (acquired by Microsoft in 2005, now Exchange Online Protection), then MailRoute since 2003. Not a name on a slide deck. The person who built the category. Read his full bio →
How we think about email security
Pure-play email security
We don’t sell endpoint protection, firewalls, or identity management. One thing: protect your email, better than companies that treat it as one checkbox in a feature matrix. Specialization isn’t a limitation. It’s how you get good.
Own infrastructure
Three US-based datacenters (redundant feeds, power, cooling) owned and operated by us, not rented from a cloud provider. When something needs fixing at 3 AM, our team fixes it. No tickets, no escalation chains, no vendor wait.
No outside pressure
Self-funded means no board pushing for quarterly growth. We don’t bundle features to inflate deal sizes. We don’t sunset products to force migrations. We build what customers need and maintain it for as long as they need it.
MailRoute's API made migrating members' emails simple and hassle-free.

We've been a MailRoute customer for years, and recommending it for adoption by clients all the way through. MailRoute is constantly expanding the back-end functionality and front-end access to it, driven by customer demand, and keeping true to their philosophy of simplicity. MailRoute services are priced so as not to break the piggy bank of your kids' lemonade stand, and scale up to enterprise flow and filter requirements as the business grows up.
